Police FC forward Derrick Kakooza is going through a rough patch in front of goal this season but head coach Abdallah Mubiru remains confident that his unquestionable work ethic will see him through.

Kakooza finished as top scorer at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Mauritania – including scoring a hattrick in the semi-finals against Tunisia – but has scored only twice in six league games since.

The forward’s numbers of three goals in 10 league games feel somewhat underwhelming for a talented striker like Kakooza who scored six times in his first 10 league games for the club.

But Mubiru insists that Kakooza’s game should not be judged solely on his scoring statistics before crediting his work ethic and desire to always get in good areas.

“I am not worried, things like this (a goal drought) happen to strikers often. Kakooza should not let it get to him because if he keeps on learning and improving, he will score more,” Mubiru said.

“We know his potential; he has been playing well and crucially he has kept on getting into those areas where the ball always drops for him.”

“Yes, he has missed a couple of chances but again that happens to anyone, he just needs to be ready when the chances come.”

“I am sure that when he gets those goals, then he will add a different dimension to his game and will become a more dangerous and accomplished forward,” Mubiru added.

Kakooza has been subject to interests from several foreign clubs including European giants AC Milan as his star continues to shine.

He faces tough competition at the club with his more senior colleagues Ben Ocen and Brian Mayanja Muluuli topping scoring charts with 11 goals each.

Police, the highest scoring side in the league this season make a trip to the Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium to face struggling Wakiso Giants – who are only a point above the relegation places – on Wednesday.

The Cops are fifth on the Uganda Premier League table on 37 points, level with KCCA, and seven points behind leaders URA with 10 games to play.
