Uganda Cranes head coach Abdallah Mubiru has named an expanded 34-player provisions squad ahead for the Cranes’ International friendly against South Africa.
The Cranes will play the Bafana Bafana during the international match window on June 10, 2021.
With a couple of experienced players including captain Denis Onyango retiring from national duty, and a couple of other regulars in the final weeks of their club seasons, Mubiru has chosen a squad of mainly local based players.
Ten foreign players have been summoned including Emmanuel Okwi who will captain the team, Mustafa Kizza, Allan Okello, Moses Waiswa, Elvis Bwomono, Abdu Lumala, Patrick Kaddu and Taddeo Lwanga.
Goalkeepers Ismail Watenga who plays for Chippa United makes a return to the Cranes fold and Azam FC’s Mathias Kigonya also make the squad.
The squad also includes 10 players who have earned their first call up to the national team. Bright Stars goalkeeper Simon Tamale’s six clean sheets in his previous 12 games have earned him a maiden call up alongside teammate Joseph Akandwanaho.
Express FC striker Eric Kambale’s rich form has also been repaid with a national selection together with captain Enock Walusimbi and Mbarara City midfielder Innocent Wafula.
Five players from the Uganda Hippos squad that played at the AFCON U20 tournament reaching te final earlier this year have also earned their first senior call ups.
These include Kenneth Ssemakula, Isma Mugulusi, Steven Sserwadda, Richard Basangwa and Derrick Kakooza. They join teammates Gavin Kizito who had his senior debut against Malawi in March and Bobosi Byaruhanga who was part of the Cranes CHAN squad.
The team will enter camp on Sunday May 30, 2021 at the Cranes Paradise Hotel in Kisaasi.
