Vipers SC registered their maiden win of the 2020/2021 StarTimes Uganda Premier League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory against newcomers Airtel Kitara at St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende.
Goals from substitutes Paul Mucureezi and Dan Sserunkuuma in the last 10 minutes cancelled out Brian Muluuli Mayanja’s goal to save Vipers’ blushes.
Vipers wasted a number of opportunities early on, Muhamad Shaban failing to beat Kitara goalkeeper Hillington Musoke, while Jamil Kaliisa was denied by the cross bar.
With half time looming, Shaban again failed to find the back of the net as he flashed his shot wide of the target from a tight angle after running through on goal.
In the 49th minute, Vipers exerted some pressure in the hunt for the opener with Shaban heading over a David Bagoole well weighed in cross.
Kitara then stunned their hosts in the 54th minute after Muluuli put the visitors ahead in the game.
Starring at the face of defeat, the Venoms stepped up the search for a leveller. Musoke pulled off an emphatic save to keep out Geoffrey Wasswa brilliant free kick in the 67th minute.
Eight minutes to full time, substitute Mucureezi who replaced Jamil Kaliisa levelled matters for the hosts with a fantastic header beyond goalkeeper Musoke’s reach.
One minute later, Sserunkuuma found the winner with a brilliant low effort off Shaban’s cut back to salvage all three points for the Fred Kajoba coached side.
Vipers has now moved to the ninth position with four points from two games while Kitara remains 15th with just one point from four games played.
Vipers will visit Busoga United in their next game on Sunday, December 20, while Kitara host Onduparaka on Saturday, December 19.
