The Uganda U20 side put up a resilient performance in their goalless draw against South Sudan at the Amri Abeid Memorial Stadium in Arusha Tanzania on Monday afternoon.

The Hippos made their numerical disadvantage count after defender Musa Ramathan saw red for an off the ball incident in the 36th minute in their opening game at the AFCON U20 Zonal Qualifiers (CECAFA U20 Championship).

South Sudan looked the better side on the day, and used the extra man to cause a couple of problems in front of goal, but the Hippos stood tall.

Vipers defender Joseph Dhata had an outstanding performance on the day, and influenced his side’s forward play down the right before he was withdrawn in the 68th minute for Emmanuel Karachonde.

Bobosi Byaruhanga produced the Hippos best chances in front of goal. Midway through the first half, his curling effort from a free-kick was kept out by Justin Simon Pita in the South Sudan goal.

Bobosi had another effort from a set piece sting Pita’s gloves in the second half as the Hippos struggled to create chances from open play.

Dani Lual had the best chance of the game with nine minutes to go but glanced his header over the crossbar from Daniel Taban’s cross.

Hippos coach Morley Byekwaso made a couple of changes introducing Ivan Bogere for Raymond Onyai, while Richard Basangwa and Najib Yiga were also brought off for Ismail Mugulusi and Joseph Kafumbe respectively.

The Hippos will play its second and final group game against Burundi on Wednesday, November 24 with maximum points needed if they are to secure progress to the next round.

Only two slots at the AFCON U20 finals are available for the CECAFA region, with the two finalists earning direct tickets to the tournament due in Mauritius in 2021.
