At just the age of 16, goalkeeper Henry Mwebe is already dreaming big and breaking into the Express FC first team is his ultimate goal as he also targets a Uganda Cranes call up.
Mwebe features for the Wankulukuku based side’s junior team ‘The Red Eaglets’ that play in the FUFA Junior League and was part of the Uganda Cubs who were crowned the CECAFA U-17 winners on Tuesday after defeating Tanzania 3-1 in Rwanda.
Mwebe was instrumental for the Uganda Cubs conceding just once throughout the tournament, a performance that earned him the Golden glove.
“It’s always an honour to represent your country and I’m so proud but this is just the beginning,” Mwebe told the Express website.
“I have to keep on pushing, get promoted to the senior team here at my club then I will be noticed by the coaches of the senior national team and continue with my growth.”
Uganda dominated the individual awards, while Mwebe finished as the best goalkeeper, Vipers SC’s Travis Mutyaba was named the Most Valuable Player.
Whereas KCCA FC’s Oscar Mawa collected the golden boot after scoring six goals at the tournament.
Mwebe alongside the other Cubs will represent Uganda at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco in 2021.
Express was represented by six players with Mwebe the most notable name while Humphrey Oyirwoth (goalkeeper), Peter Gava (defender), midfielders in Shugai Kaliisa and Samir Mudiba and forward Hassan Mubiru were also in Rwanda.
