The 2019 Airtel-FUFA Female Footballer of the Year Juliet Nalukenge has said Uganda can go on and create history by qualifying for the 2021 FIFA U17 Women World Cup in India.

The skipper has so far scored five goals in the qualifiers, bagging a hat-trick as they hammered Ethiopia 5-1 in the preliminary round and a double in the 6-2 aggregate triumph over Tanzania in the first round.

However, their biggest and final hurdle comes against an experienced side Cameroon which has qualified for the last two editions of the U-17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan (2016) and Uruguay (2018).

“The fact that no other previous team has achieved this is motivation enough for us,” Nalukenge told CAF online.

“It would mean a lot for us if we managed to earn qualification. I think we have done well in the qualifiers and I believe we have what it takes to make history for Uganda,” she added.

The Kawempe Muslim forward who dreams of playing in Europe also believes participating in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup will open so many doors for the players and that they are working so hard to achieve that.

“If we manage to qualify for the World Cup, it would open so many doors for us and that is why we are working so hard to achieve that.”

“My dream is to play in Europe and I know I can achieve that just like the many African players in major leagues abroad. I want to make my family and fans happy,” she added.

Initially scheduled for May, the double-header clash against Cameroon had to be postponed indefinitely following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, which brought all sporting activities to a standstill.

But of late, modalities to resume the FIFA Women’s U-17 and U-20 World Cup qualifiers are currently ongoing in Africa.

The rescheduled dates to restart the remaining qualifying fixtures to next year’s competitions will be disclosed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in the coming week.
