CAFWCL: CECAFA sets new dates for zonal Champions League qualifiers

According to the long-awaited CECAFA Women Champions League will be played from August 7 to 21, 2021.

The tournament was earlier postponed due to financial constraints, but CECAFA Secretary General Auka Gecho has confirmed that all has been resolved.

“We had earlier postponed the tournament due to financial logistics as we could not get the money for the tournament,” Gecho was quoted by Kenya online news.

“However, that has been settled, and the tournament will take place on the August 7,” he added.

The tournament was earlier supposed to be played between July 17 and August 1, but later, CECAFA announced that it had been postponed.

The winner of the maiden regional tournament will play in the 2021 CAF Champions League finals at Cairo, Egypt set to kick off in November.

The Champions League tournament will harbour seven teams that will be determined through zonal qualifications.

Lady Doves, who won the FUFA Super League after defeating local rivals UCU Lady Cardinals 2-1 in the final, booked a direct ticket to the CAF Champions League qualifiers.

Uganda representative Lady Doves is pitted in Group A with Burundian outfit PVP FC and Tanzania’s Simba Queens.

The Masindi based side will bank on the experience of forward Fazillah Ikwaput who was tremendous in their title winning campaign.
