Police FC has succeeded in their appeal against goalkeeper Derrick Ochan’s suspension following his contentious red card in their 3-2 defeat to Vipers SC at the St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende last Friday.

The goalkeeper was shown a straight red card after he was judged to have handled the ball outside his area, despite television replays showing that he had actually caught the ball inside his area.

Match referee George Olemu initially did not blow for a foul but his assistant on the near side Juma Osire signalled for an infringement and further consultation between the two officials saw Olemu dish out a red card.

The incident infuriated many of the fans who were torn on whether or not it was the right call with Police chairman AIGP Asan Kasingye storming the referee’s area and showing his discontent on the decision.

Police appealed to the UFA Referees Disciplinary Panel who have upheld their claim of wrongful dismissal.

Which made Ochan available for their upcoming games including their 3-1 home win over Onduparaka at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo on Wednesday.

“The UPL Secretariat is in receipt of a decision from the FUFA Referees Disciplinary Panel,” read part of the statement by the league secretariat.

The statement continued: “Which reviewed the red card shown to Police FC player Derrick Ochan during Match 57 (Vipers SC vs Police) played on Friday, February 19, 2021, at the St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.”

“The panel annulled the red card shown to Ochan due to the wrong call made by the assistant referee 2. Therefore, the said player is eligible to play for Police FC,” the statement added.

Police held a 2-1 lead by the time Ochan saw red, but two second half goals from Ibrahim Orit and Ceaser Manzoki saw Vipers take all three points and leapfrog the Cops to the top of the league table.

The Cops have since fallen into third following Express’ victory over MYDA on Tuesday but could reclaim second spot if they gain all three points against Onduparaka and close the gap against the leaders to two points.
