The 2018/2019 Total CAF Champions League group stages are delivering mixed results for Uganda’s representatives.
The biggest headline on Match day three was written by TP Mazembe, whose 8-0 win over Club Africain is a record in the history of the CAF Champions League.
TP Mazembe is home to Cranes left back Joseph Ochaya and he played an integral part in the record making game played at Lubumbashi on Sunday.
Apart from being part of Mazembe’s back four that kept a clean sheet, Ochaya also had a hand in the eight goals on the night.
At 3-0, Mazembe won a free kick, Ochaya stepped up and his left effort was sent to the top right corner, Saifeddine Charfi blocked it but in the way of Kevin Mindeko who nodded it home.
It was the second for the centre back, who had headed Mazembe into the lead 11 minutes into the game.
Jackson Muleka and Tresór Mputu also grabbed a brace each, Miché Mika and Meschak Elia scored the other goals.
The win takes Mazembe to 3 points in in their Group C, they have to visits Africain in Tunisia but also host Constantine at Lubumbashi.
Emma Okwi and Murushid Juuko’s Champions League camping started on a high when they defeated Saoura 3-0 at home, but their back to back fixtures on the road have been a nightmare.
First it was AS Vita who defeated them 5-0 in Congo, it was the same scoreline as they visited Al Ahly at the Borg El Arab Stadium.
Murushid and the Simba back line were left in sixes and sevens as the game went to the break Al Ahly leading 5-0, the Tanzanian outfit never recovered.
Al Ahly coach Martin Lasarte later said, the team had a mission to day accomplish and they did.
“With the 5-0 win, we (Ahly) achieved our goal. The competition is still on and there are other difficult games to come,” Lasarte said in the post match press conference.
His Simba counterpart Patrick Aussems was in loss of words, especially with the matter in which they conceded the goals.
“The first goal was a killer as it came after just 2 mins. We have 3 matches remaining and we still have a chance.”
Simba still have a slightly opportunity in the two to revive their continental season, they host Al Ahly at home next, together with AS Vita too.
AS Vita are second on the log on four points after their 2-2 draw with Saoura, Simba are third on three.
Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango guided Mamelodi Sundowns to a 3-1 win over Asec Mimosas.
The former champions lead group A with six points just like Moroccan outfit Waydad Athletic Club who are also on six points, but Sundowns have a better head to head.
