Despite not being the first Ugandan player to ply his trade in the Premier Soccer League, Dennis Onyango is undoubtedly the most successful Ugandan player in the history of the PSL.

He has won nine PSL titles, more than any other player and his success as a goalkeeper has played a huge contribution to South African clubs signing other Ugandan goal minders.

Onyango went to the country in 2006 joining SuperSport United and winning three PSL titles.

He currently plays for Mamelodi Sundowns where he has registered most of his success, six PSL titles among many other trophies.

Ismail Watenga and Salim Jamal Magoola are the two Ugandan custodians that have caught the eye of South African clubs recently and Onyango’s influence can not be underestimated.

“You run out of superlatives when trying to describe Onyango and he is a huge inspiration for Ugandan footballers,” Sundowns’ co-head coach Rulani Mokwena told the media during his visit to KCCA FC.

“He has righteously represented this country in South Africa and globally, and as a club, we have received a lot from him.”

“His influence is beneficial to other Ugandan goalkeepers and players because he has set himself out as a very good example.”

“Ugandan players are coming through to the PSL because of him and many more are going to play in South Africa and elsewhere,” he added.

When Watenga left Kenyan side Sofapaka, he joined Mamelodi on a three-year contract in 2020 before spending 19 months on loan at Chippa United.

He has since returned to Sundowns but information coming from South Africa indicates that the 27-year-old is set to be loaned out yet again this time around to Marumo Gallants.

Meanwhile, Salim Jamal signed for newly promoted side Richards Bay FC during the ongoing transfer window.

Goalkeeper Posnet Omony, defender Timothy Batabaire, midfielder Moses Waiswa, and forwards David Obua, Geoffrey Massa, and Brian Umony are the other familiar names that have played in South Africa previously.

It is the goalkeeping department that has so far had many representatives in South Africa as far as Uganda is concerned. Omony, Onyango, Watenga, and Salim Jamal.
