After a brilliant 2019/2020 season which saw them bag three titles – the club’s first treble in history – Mamelodi Sundowns have already set their 2020/2021 season targets.
Mamelodi capped the season with the Nedbank Cup victory a week after securing the ABSA Premier Soccer League to go with the Telkom Knockout title they won earlier in the season.
According to Uganda Cranes skipper Denis Onyango, the Brazilians’ ultimate target is to rewrite history books by securing a fourth consecutive PSL title.
Last season’s triumph was Pitso Mosimane coached side’s third consecutive league trophy after winning it in 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 seasons.
“Next season we are looking at trying to win the league again for the fourth time in a row,” Onyango exclusively told Football256.
“Of course, it will be difficult but we are not going to just give it away to anyone, they must fight for it and if they don’t deserve it, we shall retain it,” he added.
Masandawana have also set their sights to winning the MTN 8, a title they last won in 2007 when they defeated Orlando Pirates 1-0 in the final.
“Also, we have the MTN 8 which has proved to be hard to win but with new players and having continuity with all the existing players, we shall do it.”
“Hopefully it goes our way, it is a very difficult tournament because we don’t start well but we will see how it goes.”
“I think things will be okay for us as we will also try to win Champions League for the second time.”
“The coach will have to give chance to new players and sometimes it is challenging but they need to fit in the system,” Onyango noted.
Mamelodi together with Kaizer Chiefs will represent South Africa in the CAF Champions League next season. Mamelodi’s only victory in the CAF Champions League came in 2016 after a 3-1 win against Egyptian side Zamalek.
