Onyango leads Ugandan cast to inter club group stages

It’s no secret that Ugandan players who are spread across the African continent are making strides with their respective clubs competing in the two CAF prestigious competitions, the CAF Champions league and Confederations cup respectively.

Uganda Cranes skipper and Mamelodi Sundowns shot stopper Denis Onyango leads the cast of different Ugandans across the continent.

Even though he missed the games against Leones Vegeterianos and Al Ahly Benghazi due to a knee injury, Onyango was apart of the process at the start.

Sundowns beat Libyan side Benghazi 4-0 on aggregate to book a spot in the group stages of the 2018/2019 Total CAF Champions League competition for a 4th straight time.

Former KCCA FC defender Joseph Ochaya is also part of the TP Mazembe team that will play in the CAF Champions League group stages.

TP Mazembe defeated Zambian outfit Zesco United 2-1 on aggregate to advance having spent a couple of the past seasons in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Emmanuel Okwi and Murushid Juuko were strong pillars as Simba of Tanzania knocked out Nkana of Zambia 4-3 on aggregate.

Nkana won the first leg in Zambia 2-1 but Simba were ruthless in Dar Es Salaam as they won the return leg 3-1 at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam

Elsewhere, former S C Villa and Uganda Cranes coach Multin ‘Micho’ Sredejovic guided Orlando Pirates to the group stages of the CAF Champions league for the first time since 2013.

Orlando defeated Namibia’s African Stars 1-0 away to advance 1-0 on aggregate, Zambian striker Justine Shonga got the all important goal.

Pirates’s eternal rivals Kaizer Chiefs where Ugandan left back Godfrey Walusimbi plies his trade beat Madagascar’s Elgeco Plus 3-0 away to advance 6-0 on aggregate.

Walusimbi and Chiefs have made it to the play off stage of the CAF Confederations cup, the draw might tip Walusimbi against his former side Vipers.

Back home, Mike Mutebi’s charges beat Mtibwa Sugar 2-1 in Dar-es-saalam to advance 5-1 on aggregate.

The draws for the group stages of the competition will be held on 28 December.
