Mamelodi Sundowns captain Denis Onyango has expressed his pleasure after he became the most decorated player in the history of the Premier Soccer League in South Africa.
The former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper and skipper guided Sundowns to their 12th PSL title and his ninth when they drew goalless with Cape Town City on Wednesday.
“Delighted to win my ninth PSL title,” a thrilled Onyango posted on his social media accounts on Friday.
“Proud of the technical team, my teammates. To the fans, thank you for your amazing support,” the post added.
On 58 points, Masandawana is 13 points ahead of second-placed Royal AM who are on 45 points with four games to go until the end of the season.
And, nothing can change even if the former were to lose all their remaining games with the latter winning all.
It is the Tshwane outfit’s fifth league crown in a row while it is Onyango’s sixth with his current club.
The former SC Villa player won his first three PSL titles while still at SuperSport United in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
With nine trophies, the 36-year-old is ahead of any other player in the history of the PSL with Mamelodi’s former captain Hlompho Kekana who is close to him having retired on eight titles.
Onyango joined the South African league in 2006 joining SuperSport from the Ethiopian side St. George.
After four years in 2010, he was released by SuperSport and he signed for Mpumalanga Black Aces as a free agent.
It is in 2011 that he joined his current club Mamelodi and in 2013, he was loaned out to Bidvest Wits.
Since he returned from a one-year loan spell, the gigantic goal-minder has never looked back, going ahead to have a successful career.
