Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango had to play through pain barriers, as his side defeated Maritzburg United 2-1 to clinch the 2019 Telekom Knock out trophy.
The Masandawana had to come from a goal behind, with striker Mauricio Alfonso’s second-half double cancelling out Judas Moseamedi strike in the 39th minute.
Onyango missed Sundown’s CAF Champions League clash in the midweek against Wydad Casablanca, with a knee injury, and was a huge doubt for the final before he made was a late inclusion.
“I had to play through pain barriers in the final, I carried an injury that why I missed our Champions league game. I had to soldier on because its hard to find someone without injury on this team, but we give our all regardless,” Onyango said.
His evening nearly took a turn for the worse in the second minute of the game, as he clashed with defender Mosa Lebusa, but he brushed that off to continue.
Masandawana conceded in a similar fashion, as Maseamedi got in between Onyango and Lebusa to poke home the opening goal as the pair again were caught up by a long ball.
However, Alfonso rose highest to head Sundowns level nine minutes into the second half, before again scoring the winner with 16 minutes to play. Sundowns were lucky to survive a late equalizer, but Moseamedi’s header was ruled out for offside.
Onyango who has been at the heart of the club’s recent trophy-laden spell, which includes the CAF Champions League, the Premier Soccer League and now the TKO which they last won in 2015.
But the shot-stopper is still hungry for more success with the club, stressing that they need to win more trophies this season.
“It’s a special feeling, I feel it as a player but we need to celebrate with more trophy, we still have the Champions League to play for, there is the Ned Bank cup, the league is not out of our reach as well so if we can add more trophies to the TKO, then it will be great,” a jubilant Onyango said.
Mamelodi Sundowns continue to add to their trophy cabinet after rallying from behind to be crowned Telkom Knockout champions on Saturday evening.
