Onyango, Sundowns chase elusive MTN 8 trophy

Denis Onyango and Mamelodi Sundowns will get their post-Pitso Mosimane era underway with a crunch tie against Bloemfontein Celtic in the Quarterfinal of the MTN 8 tournament at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Sunday.

Under Mosimane, Sundowns conquered all winning trophies on the local and international scene including a league, Nedbank Cup and Telkom Knockout treble last season.

However, the season opening MTN 8 trophy has eluded the Brazilians for 13 years since 2007 when they last won the title.

The tournament was then called the SAA Supa8. Brent Carelse’s solitary goal against Orlando Pirates in the final secured Sundowns’ last triumph at the Kings Park in Durban.

Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mnqgithi says that his side will give it their best shot for the title and will not bow until they deliver the title that everyone at the club is yearning for.

“We have done well in the past but this trophy kept on eluding us‚ so we will try to give it our best shot‚” Mnqgithi said during a press conference.

“Rest assured‚ we will not bow down without a big fight. It is one trophy that everybody is yearning for – the Yellow Nation‚ the players‚ management‚ the president and the board,” he added.

Mnqgithi chases his second MTN 8 title after guiding Golden Arrows to a resounding 6-0 thumping over Ajax Cape Town in the 2009 final at the Orlando Stadium.

The clash will be a repeat of last season’s Nedbank Cup final where Masandawana emerged winners at the Orlando Stadium in August.

Elsewhere, MTN8 defending champions SuperSport United, home to Ugandan midfielder Moses Waiswa will take on rivals Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) in the tournament’s first game on Saturday.

TTM who bought Bidvest Wits’ Premiership status will host the game at the Thohoyandou stadium, before Orlando Pirates will host free spirited Cape Town City in Soweto.

On Sunday, Gavin Hunt will get his Kaizer Chiefs’ reign underway against Eric Tinkler’s Maritzburg United.
