Following Pitso Mosimane’s departure, Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the appointment of Manqoba Mnqgithi and Rhulani Mokwena as joint head coaches as his replacement.
Mosimane left Sundowns earlier last week and joined Egyptian giants Al Ahly in a shock move.
Rhulani and Manqoba who served as Mosimane’s assistants as Masandawana clinched the Premier Soccer League title, Telkom Knockout and Nedbank Cup last season have now been trusted to take over reigns.
“Mamelodi Sundowns today announced the appointment of Manqoba Mnqgithi and Rhulani Mokwena as head coaches with the opinion of Manqoba Mnqgithi prevailing when there isn’t consensus,” a statement from the club reads.
According to Mamelodi Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe, Mokwena and Manqoba who have been part of their technical team for many years have enough experience to take them to the next level.
“Manqoba and Rhulani have been with Mamelodi Sundowns for many years and were part of the technical team that were crowned Champions of Africa in 2016 and have also won the Premier Soccer League and other titles in South Africa,” Motsepe said before adding.
“The board of Mamelodi Sundowns was particularly keen to appoint South African coaches and express its commitment and confidence in the talent and ability of our local coaches.”
“Manqoba, Rhulani and the technical team at Sundowns will focus on defending the PSL and the other titles that we won during our historic 50-year anniversary.”
“They will also advance and continue with the objective that we stated in 2004, which is to make Mamelodi Sundowns one of the best clubs on the African Continent,” he added.
Manqoba has previously coached Golden Arrows, AmaZulu, Chippa United, before joining Mamelodi as assistant coach in 2013.
Rhulani on the other hand, served as an assistant and interim coach at Orlando Pirates as well as an interim at Chippa United.
