Former Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango is ready to compete with new signing Ronwen Williams for the goalkeeper’s position at South African giant side Mamelodi Sundowns.

Onyango has diligently served in the role of Sundown’s number one shot-stopper and his potential can never be doubted despite his age.

However, at the age of 37, it is clear the club is preparing for life without him and it is undoubtedly the reason why they have acquired the services of Williams from SuperSport United.

“Williams is welcome to Mamelodi, let us compete because competition brings improvement,” Onyango told iDiski Times before adding.

“This club should not stop after Denis leaves, after Kennedy Mwene leaves, after Richardo Goss leaves, or after Reyaad Pieterse.”

“All this is being done in the best interest of the club to make sure that we continue winning trophies and that can only be achieved when you have quality around you.”

“To improve you and to make a better goalkeeper and a better person because it is also important to be a good person before you become a good goalkeeper.”

“So, he is welcome, just like any other goalkeeper who has come to Sundowns and given us competition and added value to the club,” he added.

Williams is the South African national football team’s first-choice goalkeeper and Onyango is optimistic that they will both learn a thing or two from one another.

“We shall learn from each other as much as we can, irrespective of the fact that I am older than him. He is the captain of the South African national team.”

“He still has a few things to learn and the club has to look at his future also because, like any other big club, they always look to strengthen and look at the future.”

“Me and Kennedy we have been here for so many years and whatever we have won, it is because of the guys who have been around us.”

“They have really inspired, motivated, and encouraged us, and being in one spirit has made us who we are right now,” Onyango noted.

Both Onyango and Williams have won the best goalkeeper’s award in the Premier Soccer League twice apiece.

Onyango won it in the 2015/16 and 2020/21 seasons while Williams was crowned back to back during the 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns.
