St. Lawrence University edged Kampala University 1-0 in the first leg of the University Football League quarterfinals at Kibuli on Thursday.

Fahad Aniku scored a late winner in the 87th minute for the visitors to take a slim advantage.

Even though his side has the advantage, head coach Davis Nnono predicts that it is going to be a tough second leg.

“I am grateful for the win against such a difficult team. They were better in most of the aspects, especially in the first half,” Nnono said to the media after the game.

“Having not conceded in the first half, we also returned for the second with a better performance and Aniku scored an important goal.”

“I am also pleased with his general performance because we lost some players who joined top-flight teams but he has put up an immediate impact when called upon.”

“Today’s game is done and it is time to prepare for the second leg because there is still another difficult game to come,” he added.

SLAU will host the second leg in a fortnight at Crown City Campus, Kavule, and KU’s assistant coach Ojok Simon Peter is optimistic about reaching the semifinals.

“It was just not our day because we played well and should have killed off this game at halftime but we could not get to the end of the many chances that we created.”

“They are a good team and they sensed danger and improved in the second half.”

“There was a bit of miscommunication amongst our defenders and our opponents took advantage of that period and scored their goal.”

“But I am not afraid just yet because there is still another game and when we visit them we shall be looking forward to utilizing our chances to win and advance,” Ojok noted.

History could still repeat itself because in the 2018 semifinals SLAU won the away tie 2-1 and lost at home by the same result and were ejected 5-6 in the shootouts – but they will surely focus on avoiding that curse.

The next quarterfinal will see Bugema University host Uganda Martyrs University on Tuesday, September 20.
