Pepsi UFL: UCU assume early advantage over UMU in semifinals

By Edwin Kyle Kule

Uganda Christian University (UCU) edged Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) 1-0 in the first leg of the 2022 Pepsi University Football League semifinals in Mukono on Thursday.

Isaac Ofoyrwoth placed the hosts ahead early in the first half before he was later sent off in the second half in a bittersweet show.

In the 14th minute, Ofoyrwoth pounced on a loose ball in the area and placed the ball in the back of the net after UMU’s Joseph Kayondo miscalculated an aerial ball.

The Nkozi-based side searched for a leveller with their skipper Masudi Kafumbe all over the ground but his deliveries were well dealt with by the UCU backline.

UMU enjoyed the lion’s share of possession keeping the hosts at the receiving end.

Later in the second half, it was a point of madness as Ofoyrwoth lost his cool and retaliated against UMU’s defender Kennedy Kasozi and the center referee showed him a red card.

UCU’s Lubega Sharif nearly scored into his net as he tried to clear Masudi Kafumbe’s delivery but custodian Colins Wesonga was alert.

Moments later, UCU skipper Geoffrey Gaganga remained with only a goalkeeper to beat but Sadam Okoboi pulled off a stunning save.

With two minutes to play, Kasozi was given a controversial red card after he clashed with Rodgers Kukundakwe in an aerial challenge.

The two sides meet again on Thursday, October 27 at Nkozi in the second leg of the UFL semifinals.
