‘Players come and go, it was the right time for Bayo to leave’ – Kajoba

By Brian Aheebwa

After spending a single season with current Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC, striker Fahad Bayo signed for Israel side FC Ashdod on a four-year deal.

Ashdod beat Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca and South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns to land the Uganda Cranes lead striker.

Bayo who joined the Venoms at the start of the 2019/2020 campaign from Zambian outfit Buildcon FC on a two-year deal, leaves with a full year left to go on his contract.

While many may hold the opinion that he has left a bit too soon, Vipers head coach Fred Kajoba thinks otherwise, claiming that it was the right time for the player to move on.

“We’re really going to miss his services but I believe that it was the right time for him to go professional yet again,” Kajoba told Football256.

“Personally, I believe that players come and go and just like he came in and did well, definitely his departure paves way for yet another player already in the squad or in the market, who knows?”

“At his age and level (of performance) going out for the second time was the best option for him.”

“He was in Zambia, all didn’t go well he returned home and impressed, so a second chance abroad wasn’t a bad decision to take,” he added.

Asked on who the forward’s perfect replacement would be at Kitende with yet another prolific forward Steven Mukwala reportedly set to join URA FC, Kajoba confirmed the club already has a worthy replacement for the striker.

“We were looking at Brian Aheebwa but recently he messaged me on his move to KCCA and it looks like Steven Mukwala is not yet ready for the competition at Vipers.”

Kajoba and Vipers are not short of options to replace Bayo, with Muhamad Shaban set to return from a lengthy injury, youngster Umar Kyebatala also showed glimpses of his quality and they have the experience of Dan Sserunkuuma to call upon.

“But we have a player in Shaban (Muhammad) who’s really better than all the above but injuries have left him out until now.”

“The physicians are trying to do their work to have him ready but surely I would only wish to use him when he’s fully fit,” Kajoba noted.

Both Bayo and Mukwala were the league’s leading scorers during the cancelled 2019/20 UPL season with 12 and 13 goals respectively.

As the four-time UPL champions will be fighting to defend the domestic crown, they’ll also be playing in the CAF Champions League amongst other competitions, squad depth will be crucial.

Bayo becomes the second Ugandan player to join Ashdod after former KCCA captain Timothy Awany who joined the Israeli side in August 2019 after an impressive AFCON tournament in Egypt.
