Tanzania president John Magufuli appreciated Taifa Stars players and the entire technical staff with a plot of land each after they sealed qualification to the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations finals.
Goals by Simon Msuva Erasto Nyoni and Aggrey Morris gave Tanzania a 3-0 win over Uganda to finish second in group L and seal qualification for the first time since 1980 joining the already-qualified Uganda.
The president who was watching the match from home happily offered each player a tract of land in Dodoma as a gesture of appreciation.
“I didn’t have a plan to call the team to State House because they lost to Lesotho, a small country.” Magufuli was quoted by ITV Tanzania.
“On the Match day, I opted to watch the game from home as I was afraid, we would be embarrassed again. But all the pain is gone now after the win over Uganda.”
“These players have impressed me, and I think they deserve a reward. I am going to award them on behalf of the whole nation. The playing unit will get a piece of land in Dodoma where they will build their houses,” he added.
Tanzania needed a win to end a 39-year plague and they did it in in style, in front of their own fans.
“Qualifying for AFCON is just the beginning of the fight, all the Tanzanians are happy and I would like to congratulate them for the support and patriotism which they showed during the match,” Magufuli noted.
Tanzania’s late entry means that the CECAFA region will be represented by four countries in Egypt including Uganda, Kenya, Burundi and Tanzania.
Teams that have already qualified: Egypt, Madagascar, Senegal, Morocco, Cameroon, Mali, Burundi, Algeria, Benin, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Angola, Mauritania, Tunisia, Guinea Bissau, Namibia, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa.
