Preview: Mutebi anticipates knuckle hard derby, as KCCA visit Express FC

By Shafic Kiyaga

Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium will host the age-old rivalry between Express FC and reigning league champions Kampala Capital City Authority.

Between them, both sides have won 19 league titles. Early season form suggests that Express who last won the league title in 2011 will not be involved in the chase for the title, but signs point towards a brighter future for the Red Eagles.

On the other hand, KCCA remains the quintessential bull among the VEK triangle, winning five of the last eight league titles, though their dominance is under serious threat from Vipers SC.

The Kasasiro Boys are expected to be well in the fight for the title despite early struggles, dropping eight points already this term, compared to three at this stage last season.

Scoring has been a problem for the champions this season, as they have struggled against teams that they should be blowing away. But according to manager Mike Mutebi, it is not cause for alarm but he acknowledges the need to score with more regularity.

“We have things to rectify, but the bottom line is we have to be efficient and score more goals. That is not a worry but of course, it’s a concern we must address,” Mutebi told media ahead of the game.

“We are heading for a derby, traditionally one of the big games in the country. We are prepared for the game though I anticipate a tricky game, especially that Express have been playing well themselves.” He added.

George Ssimwogerere and his men head into the game in search of their fifth win of the season, as they keep trail on the road back to the top.

Whether Ssimwogerere is the man to lead the club back to the top is a different question altogether, but the kind of performance his side put on goes a long way in buying him a bit more time at the club, despite not necessarily being under any immediate pressure.

Express boss the deadliest attacking trio in the land. Frank Kalanda, Brian Ssenyondo and captain Disan Galiwango have been involved in a combined 14 goals; that’s more than the entire KCCA team have managed so far.

Express emerged 3-2 winners in the corresponding fixture last season, subsequently handing KCCA their first loss of the season.

Galiwango who scored a dramatic late winner is the only player in line to feature tomorrow; Eric Kambale and Micheal Birungi have since moved on from Express

Allan Okello who scored both goals for KCCA will be a miss as he is part of the Cranes team that travelled to Burkina Faso for the 2021 AFCON qualifier. Charles Lukwago and Nicolas Kasozi are the other players who are part of the Cranes team.

KCCA boast of two former Red Eagles captains; John Revita and Mike Mutyaba and the pair carry huge significance in the game. Left back Mustafa Kizza has been subject to scepticism over his future at the club something that might affect his attitude for the game.

Express will still be without goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga (back), Emmanuel Baffoe (knee), Cyrus Kibande (ankle), and Hamdan Nsubuga (heel). They are buoyed by the good news of the return to fitness of midfielder Daniel Shabena.

Express have won just three games against KCCA since 2013, while the Kasasiro boys have beaten them five times since 2016.
