Despite being the recipient of the Fortebet Player of the month of April award, Onduparaka FC captain Muhammad Shaban noted that it is an accolade for the entire team.
Shaban was named the winner of the football category at a ceremony held at Route256 restaurant in Lugogo on Tuesday.
The forward managed six goals in four games as Onduparaka enjoyed a brilliant fourth month of the year 2022.
“I am grateful for this award but I believe it belongs to the whole team because we all played well in April, the fans and management were also right behind us,” Shaban told Football256.
“Yes, I scored the goals but everyone else was also active and put up a strong performance in his position on the pitch,” he added.
At the start of April, the Caterpillars were battling relegation but the results attained throughout the month helped the team a lot and they are safe.
The Arua-based club is positioned ninth on the 16-team StarTimes Uganda Premier League log with 34 points, six points above Police FC who occupy the final relegation place with two games left.
“We were in danger but gathered ourselves and instead of backing off, the situation we were in gave us motivation.”
“I had promised the fans that we can not be relegated and I am glad we are safe,” he noted.
Onduparaka finished April unbeaten in four games, winning thrice on the bounce against Police 4-1, SC Villa 1-0, and Express FC 2-0 before they drew goalless with BUL FC.
The former Vipers SC striker netted all the six taking his tally to 15 league goals, two behind SUPL’s leading goal scorer Cesar Manzoki from the Venoms who is on 17.
And the KCCA FC Ex-player believes that it is still possible for him to beat Manzoki to the golden boot.
“The two goals are not too many. Unfortunately, I am not going to play the next game but if it is meant to be mine, I can come back and score many goals in the final game and win the golden boot.”
“But if it is as well meant to be Manzoki’s or any other person, still that will happen,” Shaban stated.
Onduparaka’s final two games of the season are against Soltilo Bright Stars FC at home and away to UPDF FC.
The 24-year-old shrugged off competition from Vipers’ duo of Manzoki and captain Halid Lwaliwa to win the accolade.
Athletics, Rugby, Basketball, and Volleyball were the other four categories that were awarded on the day.
