The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has reportedly withdrawn the Uganda Cranes of the finals of 2023 African Championship of Nations (CHAN).
This was revealed by the federation president, Moses Magogo early on Monday, citing unavailability of funds to facilitate the team.
“Like for the U23, we are left with no further option but to withdraw the Uganda Cranes from CHAN finals because @mofpedU (Ministry of Finance) has not provided the funds as appropriated by @Parliament_Ug (Parliament of Uganda),” Magogo said in a tweet.
“Sorry for the players and coaches who qualified the team but it is the moment to face the reality,” he added.
Should Uganda confirm with Africa’s football governing body CAF, a number of sanctions could await the team.
“The sanctions to Uganda will affect the future if we don’t take the hard decision now,” Magogo noted in his tweet.
This is the second time in the less than two months that a Ugandan side withdraws from a continental tournament due to similar reasons.
The Uganda U-23 team was forced to stay home in October from the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, as they were bound to face Guinea in the final round.
Uganda eliminated Tanzania due to qualify for the CHAN tournament, but unless something significant happens, it looks destined to be wasted efforts.
