Busoga United marked their 100th league game with a 2-1 victory over Express Football Club, at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.
Busoga United, then called Kirinya Jinja SS gained promotion to Uganda’s top division in 2016, together with Onduparaka and Proline FC. The club has since gone on to set themselves up as a stable and competitive mid-table side.
Frank Kalanda almost put the hosts (Express) ahead in the third minute, lashing onto a loose ball catching the Busoga United defence asleep, but the Busoga goalie Rogers Omweda was up to the challenge.
Joel Madondo then put the visitors ahead in the game after midfielder, Boban Zirintuusa set him through on goal, the striker dribbled past Express goalkeeper Tony Kyamera before coolly slotting home into an empty net.
At the half hour mark, Frank Kalanda put the Red Eagles back on level terms from the penalty spot, after Isaac Doka was brought down inside the area.
Three minutes into the second half, Zirintusa and Madondo again combined well to put Busoga back into the lead.
Madondo this time turned provider, his well-timed cross found Zirintusa at the back post, for the striker to superbly tap home past the advancing Kyamera.
Busoga managed to hold onto their lead, to pick up their fifth win of the season, and climb up to fourth on the log with 16 points from 10 games.
On the other hand, Express’ troubles are further compelled as they pick up their second consecutive loss, as they slip down to 12th on the log, with 10 points, just four points above the relegation places.
Busoga United host table leaders Vipers at the Mighty Arena in Jinja next, while Express will play Wakiso Giants at the Betway Muteesa II stadium, Wankulukuku on Saturday.
