History repeats itself is a common football saying. And history has just repeated itself as Tooro United have downed Champions KCCA to end their perfect start to the 2019/2020 season.
Charles Musiige’s solo goal in the 75th minute, was enough as 10-man Tooro United took maximum points at the St. Paul’s seminary ground, Fort Portal.
Just like it was over six months ago when Tooro knocked KCCA out of the Uganda Cup, days after they were knocked out of the CAF Confederations Cup by Otoho’o, they have struck again days after KCCA were knocked out of the CAF Champions league.
Heading into the game, the Kasasiro boys were yet to drop points in the league this season and were seeking to continue that run as they tried to keep tabs on front runners.
On the other hand, it was a home-coming for Tooro United, after they were forced to host their home games at an adopted home ground.
The visitors started better, and twice came close in the opening 10 minutes through Mike Mutyaba, while debutant Odumwegu set up Nicolas Kasozi, but his effort from 20-yard, was well kept out by goalkeeper Mehdii Kibirige.
Another debutant Kezironi Kizito ran the show for long spells in the midfield and set up a number of openings with his well timed passes, but a break through still eluded his side.
In the 32nd minute, Odumegwu’s acrobatic shot seemed destined for the back of the net, but Tooro skipper Mike Kawooya illegally kept out the ball with his hands, and the referee pointrd to the spot, with the former given his matching orders.
Mutyaba stepped up to take the resultant penalty, but his shot was superbly kept out by Kibirige.
KCCA were presented with another opportunity to take the lead moments later again from the spot with Mutyaba brought down bu Issa Lumu, and again they failed to capitalise, this time Allan Okello missing from the spot.
Mike Mutebi’s charges kept up the pressure, with Okello and Kezironi coming close, but couldnot beat the keeper, as half time approached.
Erisa Ssekisambu and Gift Ali were brought on for Mike Mutyaba and Eric Senjobe as the visitors kept their search for a goal.
But against the run of play, Musiige found the opener in the 75th minute of the game, to send the home fans into jubilation, as the game was set up for a tense finish.
Odumwegu who was a menace for the host’s defence came close to grabbing the leveler, but to no avail as Tooro kept a mean guard of their advantage.
In the end, the hosts managed to hold on as they picked up their first win back in Fort Portal, while the champions leave with their heads bowed down.
KCCA return home to host winless Bright Stars at the Star Times stadium, Lugogo on Saturday 5th, while Tooro United will be hoping to make it two out of two as struggling Kyetume visit Fort Portal on Saturday.
