Mustafa Mujuzi’s stunning late freekick has piled more misery on George Ssimwogerere and his Express side, as it condemned them to a second consecutive loss and third in the last four league games.

It also ensured Proline picked up their second win of the season, as they continued their perfect home run this season.

After the two weeks break, action in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League resumed with Proline hosting Express at the Star Times Stadium, Lugogo.

Both sides went into the game in the bottom five on the 16-team log, and a win could do as much in lifting spirits for either team. But Proline needed it more as they sought to pick up maximum points an

But its Express that started the better side of the two, with forward Frank Ssenyondo coming close in the 16th minute, after he was played through on goal with only the keeper to beat, but Hassan was on cue to save Proline from going behind early on.

The Red eagles kept up the pressure, and in the 20th minute, they found the opening goal through skipper Disan Galiwango’s header in the bottom corner at the far post.

Their lead was shortlived, as Proline skipper Noordin Bunjo replied for his side through his well-taken freekick following a foul on midfielder Mahad Kakooza.

It was pretty somber viewing for the spectators on either side, as the game offered very little in terms of goalmouth action of real attacking threat, as both teams failed to find any rhythm to their play.

At the resumption of the second half, Proline applied themselves better and bossed possession more, but still, there was little penetration in between Express’ defensive lines.

Proline had a rare opening at Express goal, in the 73rd minute, but goalkeeper Tony Kyamera pulled off a superb save to keep out Bunjo’s effort.

In the 83rd minute, Kyamera could do absolutely nothing to keep out defender Mustafa Mujjuzi’s thunderous freekick, surely one of the contenders for player of the season.

Lule yet to find the style but has the character

Proline head coach Matia Lule is yet to enforce the style expected, but one thing is certain, his team have the right character within to deliver and fight on even when the odds seem not to be in their favour.

They have won two games so far in the league, a meagre return, but one that should be enough to sit comfortably in the mid-table, save for the six points they were docked for failing to honour the Villa fixture.

They sat bottom heading into the game week, and they remain bottom after the win, but if they are to survive the relegation struggle as well as fight on for on the continental front, it is such performances that will matter in the long run.

They did not apply themselves in the best way they could, but that could be because of Express’ approach to the game. Proline had episodes where they showed how brilliant they can be. Had they been consistent for longer periods, they could have blown their opponents away.

This was also evident in their CAF Confederations Cup game against AS Kigali especially in the opening 20 minutes, but they later switched off. It is that level of performance that Lule needs to inspire within his players, and they could be one to look out for in the league.

Proline head to St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende next, as they visit Vipers SC on Saturday 5th, October 2019 while Express FC host Police FC at the Betway Muteesa II stadium Wankulukuku on Friday 4th.
