Review: Nduggwa late goal delivers Bengo first career victory

By Shafic Kiyaga

Wakiso Giants got back to winning ways, rallying from a goal down to pick up their first win in four games, against Busoga United at the Kabaka Kyabaggu stadium, Wakiso.

The victory was also the first registered under caretaker manager Steven Bengo, at the second time of asking.

The Purple Sharks had lost their last three games on the bounce, and they desperately needed a change in results going forward.

Bengo made just one change to the side that played against Vipers on Tuesday, Amos Muwonge starting in the place of Chrizestom Ntambi.

Both sides barely left first gear inside the opening 15 minutes, but Wakiso were forced into a quick substitution with goalkeeper Yasin Mugabi coming off for Derrick Emukule following a nasty collision with Busoga forward Dan Sewava.

In the 26th minute, Wakiso went behind in the game, Busoga defender Abubakar Otwau rose highest to nod his side into the lead.

The Purple Sharks drew level deep into first half added time, Vianne Ssekajugo rising at the near post to head home Namwanja’s cross and subsequently his fifth goal of the season.

It was pretty much back and forth action from either side, as they went in search of perhaps the winning goal, but to no avail.

In the 63rd minute, Busoga almost found the second, but David Bagoole’s thunderous shot from outside the box was kept out superbly by Emukule’s diving save.

At the hour mark, Bengo came up with an inspired substitution, bringing off Geofrey Sserunkuuma who is yet to score a goal at the club, for Abdul Karim Nduggwa.

Twelve minutes later, Nduggwa would produce the decisive moment of the game, slotting home the rebound after Lawrence Bukenya’s long range effort hit the bar and fell straight into his path.

The victory meant Wakiso win their first league game since October, and therefore climb to seventh on the log, level on points with Kyetume who were thumped 7-1 by Onduparaka. The Purple sharks visit Kyetume next Wednesday.

Busoga remain sixth on the table with sixteen points as well but could slip further down basing on results elsewhere.

Their woes continue as they are condemned to their third consecutive loss. Of course, they will hope to arrest the poor form when they host Maroons FC at the Might Arena still on Wednesday.
