Paul ‘Latest’ Nkata began his tenure as Mbarara City FC head coach in high gear after his side edged out Busoga United FC 2-1 in their Star Times Uganda Premier League tie played at the Luzira prison grounds on Tuesday evening.
It’s the home side that drew first blood with forward Brian Ahebwa slotting in off a Paul Mucureezi assist in the 16th minute.
The visitors tried to respond with a quick leveller through talisman Joel Madondo but the Ankole Lions skipper Hilary Munkundane was alert to deal with all threats.
With a minute to half time, danger man Mucureezi doubled his side’s lead, this time with Ibrahim Orit assisting to ensure the first stanza ended 2-0.
After recess, Busoga returned fully recharged, with more vigour and pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute, through Ibrahim Mugulusi’s shot outside the 18-yard box.
Busoga tried to push for the leveller in the dying moments of the game, but they found Mbarara’s resolve as strong. The hosts managed to hold on till the final whistle to gift new gaffer Paul Nkata with a precious victory in his first game in charge.
The result takes Mbarara to eight points from six games so far, while Busoga are ninth on the 16-team log, with six points from as many games.
The Ankole Lions return to action this weekend on Saturday 05th, October with an away trip to the Kabaka Kyabaggu stadium to take on Wakiso Giants FC while Busoga will entertain SC Villa on the same day at the Mighty Arena in Jinja.
