Review: Okwalinga brace earns Mbarara city dramatic win over Onduparaka

By Football256 Team

Former Onduparaka FC midfielder Solomon Okwalinga bagged a brace as Mbarara City picked up their maiden victory back at the Kakyeka stadium, Mbarara.

Okwalinga scored with virtually the last kick of the game as Mbarara city picked up a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Caterpillars who really struggled to get to grips with the soaked up playing surface at Kakyeka.

The game was also Brian Ssenyondo’s first game back at the club after he was sensationally given the coaching reigns at the club, 21 days since he was sacked from the role.

The Ankole Lions did start well in the game and were relentless in the opening minutes. In the 18th minute, the hosts’ early pressure did pay off, as an unmarked Okwalinga nodded home into an empty net from Swalik Bebe’s clever lob following a quick break down the left.

The hosts had another opportunity to double their lead in the 37th minute, but striker Brian Ahebwa failed to capitalize, striking his effort onto the crossbar with goalkeeper Yusuf Wasswa already beaten.

Onduparaka who were second fiddle for most of the first half had a rare sniff at Mbarara’s goal right at the stroke of halftime. But goalkeeper Tom Ikara went down well to save from captain Gadaffi Wahab’s long range freekick.

The opening minutes of the second half were not as bright and entertaining as the first half, due to the deteriorating nature of the pitch.

Onduparaka settled into the game, cooking up attacks after the other, but still failed to find a way back into the game. With 15 minutes to play, Ondu found a lifeline, Rajab Kakzaoo rising well to head home Ghadafi Wahab’s cross.

A draw seemed the more likely result as full time approached, but Okwalinga managed to produce the decisive moment with 30 seconds of added time to play.

Ibrahim Orit’s corner did not look dangerous, but the midfielder managed to snick ahead of Onduparaka defenders at the near post to brush home the winner and send the home fans into a frenzy.

The victory comes over a month since they last won in the league, as they take their season tally to 13 points, but the remain 14th on the log. On the other hand, the loss dents Onduparaka’s chase of leaders Vipers as it opens the gap to 10 points, they remain fourth on 23 points, from 14 games.
