Review: Two in a row as Mbarara cruise past Struggling Kyetume FC

By Shafic Kiyaga

Two second half goals from Jasper Aheebwa and Ibrahim Orit, were all that were required for Mbarara FC to earn second consecutive win at Kakyeka Stadium, in the star times Uganda premier league.

The Ankole lions headed into the game on a high note, after picking up a dramatic victory over Onduparaka three days ago in what was coach Brian Ssenyondo’s first game back at the helm of the club.

Neither side managed to turn on the flair in the opening exchanges of the game. The hosts saw more of the ball in the first half, but could not find a way through the resolute Kyetume defence.

From the resumption of the second stanza, Mbarara made clear their intent of picking up maximum points. Ssenyondo made a double substitution early into the second half, Gaddafi Gardinho coming off for Brian Aheebwa, while Onyai came on for Paul Mucureezi.

The Ankole lions kept up the search for a second, pushing forward but still a breakthrough remained elusive. Joel Mutakubwa standing tall to thwart any kind of pressure coming his way.

Pulling off superb save after another. The epitome of that came via a heroic double save to deny Brian Aheebwa with an hour played.

Mbarara’s pressure would pay off in the 65th minute. Denis Lubowa turning the ball into his own net to grant Mbarara the lead.

Kyetume almost grabbed a leveler with 10 minutes to play. Forward Sharif Ssaka’s defence splitting pass picked up Robert Ssentongo but his effort was well kept out by Mbarara shot stopper Tom Ikara.

For the second game in a row, Mbarara did produce a late goal. Ibrahim Orit coolly slotting into the back of the net past Mutakubwa in the 90th minute, to surely seal all three points for the hosts.

The victory takes Mbarara up to ninth on the log, as they leapfrog their visitors Kyetume FC who drop down to 10th. Both teams are level on points, 16 points with a game to play in the first round.
