Samuel Eto’o calls time on his 22-year football career

Former Cameroon national team captain Samuel Eto’o has called on his illustrious 22-year football career at the age of 38. 

The four-time African Player of the Year enjoyed a trophy-laden career at the top level of the game, winning numerous trophies with Barcelona and also representing his country at four World Cups.

“The end. Towards a new challenge. Thank you all, big love,” Eto’o who is regarded as one of Africa’s greatest-ever players posted on his official Instagram handle.

He made his senior debut in 1997 and went on to score 370 goals for the clubs he played for and 56 goals for Cameroon national team.

Eto’o reached the climax of achievements regards club achievements when he won back to back trebles in Spain with Barcelona and in Italy with Inter Milan.

He started his youth career at Kadji Sports Academy before joining Real Madrid before he was loaned to Leganes, Espanyol, and Mallorca.

He impressed at Mallorca and this forced Barcelona to sign him in 2004, in five years spent at Barca, he helped them win two Champions Leagues, four La Liga titles, two Supercopa de Espana and one Copa del Rey.

In 2009, he joined Inter Milan where he won the UEFA Champions League for the third time in his career. He also won Serie A, Supercoppa Italiana, Fifa Club World Cup and Coppa Italia titles at Internazionale.

He later played for Anzhi Makhachkala, Chelsea, Everton, Sampdoria, Atalyaspor, Konyaspor and Qatar SC to make the total of 13 clubs he played for in his career.

Eto’o was the youngest player to play at the 1998 world cup, as he made made his debut for Cameroon at the tournament at the age of 17 as he went on to become the highest goal scorer for his nation.

Eto’o won gold at the 2000 Olympics as well as two Africa Cup of Nations titles in 2000 and 2002 for the Indomitable Lions.

He won four African Player of the Year accolades in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010 on top of being voted as the African Young player of the year in 2000 and was voted the third best player in the world in 2005 and retires as Cameroon’s all-time top scorer.
