Sports Club Villa completed a double over rivals Express for the first time since 2015 in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

The 16-time league champions picked a slim 1-0 victory over Express at the Bombo Barracks grounds on Tuesday evening.

Emmanuel Wasswa’s header in the second half was enough to hand the Jogoo bragging rights in the derby.

The game started out at a slow pace, with either side looking to struggle with nerves and the anticipation from the stands.

For the first 15 minutes, it was more of ping pong than a game of football between two of the biggest clubs in Ugandan football.

With both teams putting up average performace, it is Villa that really laboured to try and force something to come their way.

The few times that the Jogoo had intent and purpose about their play, they looked capable of hurting Express.

Midway through the first half, Express goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga was called into action and did well to thwart Ambrose Kirya’s low cross with Bashir Mutanda lurking behind.

Industrious midfielder David Owori also drew a fine double save from Muwanga moments before halftime.

Frank Ssenyondo’s header went inches wide at the far post in the 55th minute, the only real goal opportunity Express had in the opening hour.

Muwanga was the only stumbling block stopping Villa from taking the lead, as he pulled off a couple of top notch saves to keep the score at goalless.

Brilliantly tipping over Emmanuel Wasswa’s header, while he also pulled off a brilliant save to deny Bashir Mutanda.

In the 69th minute, he was finally beaten by Wasswa’s header from close range, with the srriker meeting Owori’s inch perfect cross.

The Red eagles finally picked up pace after conceding, but still were far from finding a leveler, but Villa’s backline was comfortably determined to see out the game.

The Jogoo climb back above Onduparaka into third, with 33 points from 19 points. Express, on the other hand, stays 12th on the log with 21 points, two points above the relegation zone.
