Second half substitute Faizal Kazibwe saved SC Villa’s blushes with a late goal as the record StarTimes Uganda Premier league winners laboured to a 1-0 victory over newly promoted MYDA.

The Jogoo despite dominating possession and had twice as many shots at goal over their visitors in the game at the Bombo barracks Grounds on Friday, but were unconvincing especially in the final third.

SC Villa had a strong start to the game, Isaac Ogwang’s snap shot from just outside the area flying off the cross bar, and that set the tempo of the game.

The Jogoo perhaps left with a sour feeling as they were denied by the wood work on three occasions in the first half.

Goffin Oyirwoth put his header onto the upright from Derrick Ndahiro’s cross, while the latter also had his free kick hit the cross bar.

The game quickly turned into an end-to-end affair but both sides were culprit of lethargic play in the final third as the first half ended goalless.

As both teams re-emerged from the dressing rooms for the second half the onus was on the Jogoo to find the break through and they made a positive start with Ogwang again coming close.

MYDA had their biggest opportunity of the game in the 66th minute, Norman Ogik set up Eric Mutebi who was imperious on the day, but the midfielder’s effort sailed just wide of the target.

Mutebi should have put MYDA into the lead following a poor clearance from Villa goalkeeper Saidi Keni, but Mutebi’s shot from 35 yards flew off the crossbar.

With five minutes to go, Villa finally found the break through second half substitute Faizal Kazibwe slotting into the back of the net at the far post from Ronald Ssekiganda’s headed pass.

The win lifts Villa into fifth position on the table, above rivals KCCA on 10 points with a trip to the Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium against Wakiso Giants to come next on Wednesday.

MYDA’s struggles are further compelled with their fourth consecutive defeat of the season. They are at home to URA FC nest on Tuesday.
