Kitende side Vipers SC produced a stunning second half to win 3-1 against UPDF FC in the first leg of the Stanbic Uganda Cup on Saturday at the Bombo Military Barracks Stadium.

In the scorching Saturday sun, the home side took first blood off an early Brian Kayanja strike after 11 minutes in a half that Vipers failed to show up.

The visitors were hugely disappointing in the opening half, failing to pose any serious threat to the hosts’ backline with goalkeeper Eric Kibowa having less than nothing to do.

The Venoms knew they had to up their game in the last half against a side that has never beaten them in their history.

To add more context, Vipers had already triumphed twice against the army side in the Premier League this season- winning 1-0 and 3-0.

The second half was the direct opposite of the first: Fred Kajoba’s side upped the tempo and created multiple clear chances, and it was only moments before they broke the deadlock.

Two quick-fire goals popped in the 64th and 67th minutes. The first, UPDF’s Joseph Vuni expertly or weirdly converted in his net off Bobosi Byaruhanga’s corner.

Three minutes later, Ibrahim Orit added a second before substitute, Congolese Ceasor Manzoki wrapped the day with a sublime diving header off Abraham Ndugwa’s cross.

Kajoba’s team are looking for the first domestic double in their history. They sit second in the league within a point off leaders URA SC and now hold an advantage to progress to the last eight.

The 2016 Cup champions will be looking to wrap the tie next week on Tuesday, May 4, in familiar style to keep up the push for this season’s glory.
