Allan Kateregga and Maritzburg United secured a top-flight spot in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after beating National First Division minnow Royal Eagles 2-0 at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban in the promotion/relegation playoffs on Wednesday.
Goals from Siphesihle Ndlovu and Thabiso Kutumela were enough for the ‘Team of Choice’ to overcome Royal Eagles to secure their 2019/2020 Absa Premiership place with a game to spare.
Ndlovu broke the deadlock with a low shot with three minutes to halftime break before Kutumela doubled their lead in the 73rd minute with a charming free kick.
Maritzburg United came into this encounter needing just a point to survive drop but only to go away with maximum points, they had beaten Royal Eagles and Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila in the previous games.

Eric TInkler’s charges finished 15th on a 16-team Absa premiership log last season, they only confirmed their place in the play-offs on the last day of the season after a one-all stalemate with Baroka FC, Free State Stars were relegated after a 1-0 defeat against league champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
They were therefore dropped to Absa Premiership/ National First Division promotion-relegation playoff but they’ve handled their promotional fixtures with vigilance winning three out of three.
They are looking forward at ending their promotional campaign on high when they take on Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivuhandila on Saturday June 1st at Harry Gwala Stadium.
Uganda Cranes international Kateregga who plays for Maritzburg United on loan from Cape Town City made 15 appearances in the PSL last season for both clubs, eight were with Maritzburg and the others for Cape Town City.
However, out of the three playoff games he featured once, it was Maritzburg’s 1-0 win over Royal Eagles in the first leg last week.
