South Africa: Kateregga’s Maritzburg to fight for their lives in playoffs

Allan Kateregga’s Maritzburg United have a second big chance of beating relegation after their one-all stalemate against Baroka FC in the last game of Absa Premiership at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.

The Eric Tinkler coached side entered the game looking for nothing else rather than three points to stay safe, Mohau Mokate gave them an early lead as he scored off Kateregga’s corner kick in the 19th minute.

But they failed to contain Baroka as Mduduzi Mdantsane leveled matters in the 65th minute to force it into a draw.

Free State Stars who lost to eventual champions Mamelodi Sundowns were instead relegated, however even though they were level with Maritzburg United on 27 points.

Maritzburg’s superior goal difference of negative 10 was the only difference, Free State Stars had their goal difference standing at negative 16 goal.

Team of Choice will now fight for their place in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in a play-off against Royal Eagles and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, who respectively finished second and third in National First Division (NFD) log in the previous weekend.

Denis Onyango’s Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned league champions for the ninth time with their 1-0 win condemning Free State Stars to relegation, it is their third title in the last four years, it was Onyango’s sixth PSL title.
