Samuel Kayongo SSekamatte and Joseph Akandwanaho’s second-half goals helped Bright Stars to a 2-0 victory over KCCA at the MTN Omondi Stadium on Thursday.

Sskamatte put the visitors in the lead after 67 minutes with his 12th goal of the season in all competitions before Akandwanaho’s solo goal settled the game later on.

KCCA caretaker manager Morley Byekwaso had warned that his side should brace for a difficult and tough challenge against Bright Stars.

And it became apparent how tough a challenge they faced when Joseph Janjali’s shot from over 35 yards rattled the crossbar with goalkeeper Charles Lukwago beaten early on.

KCCA struggled to be ‘themselves’ as Byekwaso had promised, with the Kasasiro Boys taking half an hour to produce a real threat, Peter Magambo glancing Sadat Anaku’s free-kick onto the post.

With KCCA’s frailties especially in attack apparent for all, Baker Mbowa sensed that his side stood a chance in the game and at the start of the second half he introduced Akandwanaho.

Akandwanaho’s pace tilted the game in the visitors’ favour and it took them 22 minutes to take the lead. Samuel Ssekamatte’s free-kick through the wall deflected by Musa Ramathan past Lukwago.

Sadat Anaku almost levelled matters with a ferocious free-kick from 25 yards only to be denied by Simon Tamale’s fingertips.

Akandwanaho produced a sublime solo goal to put the game beyond their hosts with nine minutes to go. The forward dribbled past two KCCA defenders before slotting into the bottom corner.

Bright Stars continue their imperious form with a fifth victory from their last six games as they rise to sixth on the table on 33 points.

The defeat all but ended KCCA’s chances for a 14th league title as they now lie 10 points behind leaders URA FC on 37 points with nine games to go.
