Samuel Ssekamatte was yet again the star as Bright Stars FC defeated Mbarara City FC 3-1 in the Uganda Premier League at Kavumba Recreation Center on Tuesday.
Ssekamatte scored a brace to take his tally to 12 league goals one behind top scorer Yunus Ssentamu of Vipers SC. He has proved his mettle scoring eight goals in the last eight league games.
Derrick Ngobi scored Bright Stars’ third goal while Mbarara scored through Bashir Mutanda.
Although the game had a slow start, the hosts should have taken the lead in the 17th minute of the game but Mbarara goalkeeper Mohammad Ssekeba was alert to deny Joseph Janjali from a free kick punching it out for a corner kick.
Five minutes later the deadlock was broken when Ssekamatte generated enough power to nod in Andrew Kaggwa’s beautiful cross into the area.
In the 26th minute, Bashir Mutanda levelled matters for the Ankole Lions when his shot sailed through a crowd into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Simon Tamale.
Mutanda’s equalizer was short lived with Ssekamatte restoring Bright Stars’ lead in the 28th minute once again off Kaggwa’s assist.
The Ankole Lions pressed for another equalizer and thought they had gotten it with halftime looming but striker Henry Kitegenyi was denied by Tamale from close range.
Both sides returned from the dressing room with little intensity mostly in the final third and it took over 10 minutes for the first chance of the second half to happen.
In the 68th minute, the home side were awarded a free kick on the edge of the opponent’s box and Ssekamatte’s effort hit the lower post with on hand Ngobi to score from the rebound.
Livingstone Mbabazi’s charge had most of the ball in the last 20 minutes but could not find a way through.
Bright Stars are unbeaten in the last eight league games played and maintained sixth place but moved 37 points level with fourth and fifth-placed KCCA FC and Police FC respectively who are better on goal difference.
A loss for Mbarara City left them 12th on 26 points, six points above the relegation zone with seven games to go.
Bright Stars will visit BUL FC on Saturday, May 15 while on the same day Mbarara City will host Onduparaka FC.
