Vipers SC’s Yunus Ssentamu has won the Striker of the Season award of 2020/21 Football Best of the Season Awards.
Ssentamu enjoyed a sensational campaign with Vipers, reaching incredible heights during what was his career-best season in front of goal since breaking through the ranks at Kitende in 2014.
Ssentamu scored 16 goals in the 2020/21 league season, finishing ahead of Express FC’s Eric Kambale (15 goals), Steven Mukwala (14 goals) and Wakiso Giants’ Vianney Ssekajugo (13 goals).
The 26-year-old’s career looked to have waned off following two years away from football but returned even stronger and reminded his doubters of what a commendable goal scorer he is.
He returned to his boyhood club four games into the season and immediately hit the ground running, scoring a double on his homecoming as Vipers obliterated MYDA FC 7-0 at the St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende.
Ssentamu went on to score six times in his first 10 games for the Venoms, and by the end of April, he firmly had his eyes on the top scorer’s gong.
With the season entering its business end, and Vipers in the hunt for their fifth league title, Ssentamu scored six more goals in six games, but the Venoms fell short of defending their title as the season was cut short with Express declared the winners.
Speaking to Football256 recently, Ssentamu said that he was not surprised by his achievement during the season.
“I thank Vipers for giving me a second chance,” he said, adding; “This (winning the golden boot) has not come as a shock because I have been scoring goals since I was a boy and through my high school.”
The inaugural edition of the awards that recognise the best performers in the seas was announced on Friday, and Ssentamu received the award following a vote by a panel of Football256 writers.
Meanwhile, Police FC forward Brian Mayanja Muluuli scooped the breakthrough player of the season, with Ssentamu’s teammate Bobosi Byaruhanga winning the young player of the season award.
Express FC goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga won the best goalkeeper of the season after a campaign of rejuvenation where he has kept 13 clean sheets in 24 games. Express captain Enock Walusimbi was recognised with the defender of the season award.
Elsewhere, KCCA FC’s incredible work on social media through their engagements and presence on all social media outlets were recognised as the ‘most vibrant club on social media’, while the club’s media team received recognition for the club media team of the year.
Following a season where the league trophy returned to Wankulukuku, Express FC fans were recognised for spurring their team on even amidst the strict lockdown measures due to COVID-19.
