Ssenyondo deserves to be given more time – Ayiekoh

By Shafic Kiyaga

Former Busoga United head coach Charles Ayiekoh has called upon the top bosses at Uganda Premier League side Mbarara City to accord more time to interim head coach Brian Ssenyondo.

Ssenyondo got his second tenure at the club this season underway with a 2-1 victory over fourth placed Ondupraka FC, as the club subsequently picked up their first win of the season back at the Kakyeka Stadium.

Solomon Okwalinga opened the scoring for the Ankole Lions in the 18th minute, nodding home into an empty net from Swalik Bebe’s clever lob following a quick break down the left.

Onduparaka did draw level with 15 minutes of the game to play. Rajab Kakooza heading home captain Gadaffi Wahab’s freekick to set up a nervous end to the game.

Okwalinga again came to the fore for Mbarara scoring the winner with virtually the last kick of the game, brushing home Ivan Orit’s corner at the near post, to seal all three points.

“This is the kind of performance you expect from Mbarara City, and it is wins like this that get the fans dancing and chanting at the top of their voices,” Ayiekoh who was working as a pundit for the league broadcasters Sanyuka TV said.

“I don’t believe in five games you can really judge someone if they are able to handle the club and take them forward,” He added.

Ssenyondo was appointed on an interim basis at the start of the season, replacing Livingstone Mbabazi who had crossed town to Onduparaka. The 26-year-old was sacked five games into the new season, after picking up just one win.

He was replaced by Paul Nkata, who also faced the sack 21 days into his tenure at the club, after registering just one win in the seven games he was in charge of the club. With Ssenyondo sensationally re-instated but until the end of the first round.

“I felt like Ssenyondo was not accorded the right backing at the club, but he has the potential to handle this club and be successful.”

“When you look at the way the team played today and the reaction he has managed to get from the players, it spells good times for the club, but the coach (Ssenyondo) will need more time if he is to implement his ideas.” Ayiekoh continued.

Ssenyondo is yet to be confirmed as the head coach on a permanent basis, but the understanding is he will be at the helm till the end of the first round, after which a decision on who the permanent coach will be communicated.
