Express Football Club head coach George Ssimwogerere is adamant about changing his beliefs as a coach and remains certain that his approach will soon bear fruits at the club.
The six-time Uganda Premier League champions have blown mostly cold this season, they lie 12th on the log with 21 points, five above the relegation places.
The Red Eagles have won just four of their last 10 games, losing as many and that includes a 6-1 hammering at the hands of Police FC, the club’s heaviest defeat in history.
Ssimwogerere’s side has since bounced back with back to back victories and in a convincing manner; picking up respective 3-0 victories over Proline FC in the league and St. Mary’s in the Uganda Cup.
That all come amidst ever-growing calls for the coach to be sacked, fans have been vocal against their former captain, despite Ssimwogerere retaining the backing of the board.
“I am not going to change anything about my coaching style and approach because of a few bad results and some external pressure,” Ssimwogerere told Football256.
“I am in the middle of an interesting project, we have recruited some exciting young talents who need time and patience,” he added.
Ssimwogerere is just 10 days from marking a year since he took over at the club from Kefa Kisala, and he feels he needs more time to drive the club back to where they should be.
“I have been here for a year, and am slowly changing the mentality of the club. All the players I have still need time because am not looking at two years, but this is for the long term,” he added.
The Red Eagles visit rivals SC Villa on Wednesday at the Bombo Barracks grounds, seeking to avenge their defeat in the first leg, and Ssimwogerere expects his charges to be up for the game.
“This is a derby, and with derbies, anything can happen. Of course, we are as motivated for the game because such games mean a lot to the players and the club,” Ssimwogerere said.
Express have not defeated their rivals since 2017, while you have to trace back to October 2013 for the last time Express picked up an away victory over Villa.
