In the wake of exiting the 2021/22 Stanbic Uganda Cup, albeit, at the semi-finals, Mbarara City FC head coach Sadiq Ssempigi expressed optimism that they will return next season an improved side.

The Ankole Lions suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of defending champions Vipers SC, at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Tuesday.

The victory was courtesy of a blistering second half from the Venoms, with Halid Lwaliwa, Milton Karisa, Yunus Sentamu, and Bobosi Byaruhanga on the scoresheet.

This followed the first leg 2-1 loss in the preceding week, taking the aggregate tally to 6-1.

The Cup exit added to more Mbarara misery barely two weeks after they confirmed relegation from the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. However, Ssempigi is certain they will be back much better.

“We have accepted how things are at the moment. We know we shall play in the Big League next season so, we are getting back to the drawing board,” he told the press after the game.

“We are going to prepare thoroughly and we shall return an improved team.”

About the poor second-half show that had them concede four, Ssempigi was quick to curse their low concentration levels.

“We managed to match their energy, the crosses and set pieces in the first half, we even cut off their supply to the box,” he said.

“However, in the second half, we lost concentration especially after conceding that early goal, and, everything slipped,” he added in an honest assessment.

Vipers will take on the winner between BUL FC and Booma FC at the final. The latter beat the former 5-1 for the first leg in Masindi.
