The 2022/23 Uganda Premier League took a long break with 14 games played by each team, with its return bound for February.

At the time of the bend, KCCA FC were leaders with 29 points, two ahead of joint runners-up BUL FC and Vipers SC, who are on 27. However, a host of players have put in quite the shift to warrant special recognition.

GK: Alfred Macumu Mudekereza (Vipers)

The Congolese import has been one of the best signings of the Season, and the best for Vipers. Before his injury, Mudekereza had conceded just three goals in 11 games, the fewest by any goalkeeper.

RB: Grant Matsiko (Wakiso Giants)

He’s been by far the best right-back in the first half of the season. He’s been consistent with impressive attacking and defensive shows week in and week out, and it’s hard to find a rival for Matsiko.

LB: Derrick Ndahiro (URA)

The league is at the moment short of quality in the position, with Ndahiro one of the few that has managed some bits of brilliance, despite a torrid first round by his URA FC team.

CB: Geoffrey Wasswa (KCCA)

After overcoming injury setbacks that had him sit out the entirety of last season, Wasswa returned and organized a wall at Lugogo. He’s formed a formidable partnership with recruitee, Mustafa Mujuzi, with the pair being a pillar in their side’s title charge.

CB: Hillary Mukundane (Vipers)

The former Mbarara City FC skipper has taken full advantage of Livingstone Mulondo and Murushid Juuko’s absences to induct himself as an undroppable.
He has been a rock in the League’s meanest defence and hasn’t a minute since Vipers’ first game with Soltilo Bright Stars.

CDM: Siraje Ssentamu (Vipers)

You can only understand his importance when he’s away. Ssentamu has been the engine at Kitende, protecting the backline with absolute tenacity and kick-starting attacks a few times. He has been a rock, yet his passing has improved greatly this season. A tight choice, just ahead of Ashraf Mugume.

AM: Allan Okello (KCCA FC)

His return to the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo has seen a renaissance for the Kasasiro Boys as they lead the chase for this season’s title. He has chipped in well with three assists and four goals.

AM: Hassan Ssenyonjo (Wakiso Giants)

Ssenyonjo has been low-key one of the best players this campaign in the league. The Wakiso Giants captain is the most consistent player in the league and has been a creative spark for the Sharks.

FW: Ibrahim Kasule (Wakiso Giants)

The youngster is at the moment the Player of the Season. He’s been dazzling and consistent with his creativity and goalscoring prowess. The young Purple Shark has managed five goals and as many assists.

FW: Fred Amaku (Maroons FC)

Seven goals for the Prison Warders is enough to warrant Amaku a place in the starting lineup. The forward is currently the top scorer along with Bright Stars’ Nelson Senkatuka. Sadly, he missed out on a spot in the CHAN squad.

FW: Nelson Senkatuka (Bright Stars)

Senkatuka has been in scintillating form this season, racking up seven goals and four assists, with his goal contributions the most by any player. He has been Bright Stars’ most important player alongside Warren Buule, Andy Kyambadde, Emmanuel Loki and Ibrahim Kasinde.

Coach: John ‘Ayala’ Luyinda (Wakiso Giants)

Ayala has had his team play the most eye-catching football. Unlike in the past for the Sharks, his cute style has been matched up with impressive results. He beats the likes of Bright Stars’ Asaph Mwebaze and BUL FC’s Alex Isabirye.
