Patrick Kakande’s first-half strike was enough to give SC Villa a 1-0 win against Maroons FC in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League on Sunday.
The narrow win at Akii Bua Stadium was the first in three games after losing the last two on the bounce.
Maroons kicked off the game on the front foot with quick attacks but, Villa’s backline was equal to the challenge.
In the 12th minute, Kakande left the whole of the Maroons’ defence on the floor, before he shot past Emmanuel Akol to give the hosts a lead.
The guests nearly levelled it right away, but Denis Orombi’s shot was blocked by Charles Bbaale before it went on goal.
Kakande had a chance to seal his brace but he tapped wide Bbaale’s well-swung in cross from the right flank.
On the return of the second stanza, Umar Lutalo nearly extended Villa’s lead after beating the goalkeeper, but Belmos Opio cleared it off the line.
In the 50th minute, Kenneth Semakula was sent off after denying a goal-scoring opportunity.
But, Meddie Kibirige stepped up to deny Fred Amaku from the spot.
Right from that moment, the visitors were in attack but the result hardly changed.
The result sends the Jogoo in the 5th with 17 points while Maroons sit 11th on the 15-teamed log.
In the next games, SC Villa will play against Blacks Power on while Maroons will host Gaddafi FC on Wednesday December 12.
