Vipers SC perfectly finished the job of winning the 2021/22 StarTimes Uganda Premier League by defeating last year’s winners Express FC 3-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Friday.

And, during his post-match interview with the club media, Express’ interim head coach James Odoch paid homage to the new champions.

“Let me take this opportunity to congratulate Vipers upon winning the UPL,” Odoch stated before noting why Express lost the game.

“I think they wanted that result very much and as I said before the game, they are more dangerous when it comes to crosses.”

“It is exactly how we conceded the first two goals because we allowed them that I thought we would avoid it but we could not.”

“I think it was their day and they deserve to be champions,” Odoch added.

A Yunus Sentamu brace and another goal from Bright Anukani were enough for the Venoms to clinch their fifth SUPL titles.

They won it with four games to go until the 2021/22 SUPL season climaxes given that they are on 64 points, 14 points ahead of second-placed KCCA FC who are on 50 points.

Meanwhile, the Red Eagles were losing their second game on the bounce having lost 2-0 at home to Onduparaka FC a week ago.

But Odoch insists that they will continue fighting for a top-four finish.

“Focus remains on a top-four finish, we shall continue improving in training and ensure that we get good results in the remaining games,” he noted.

The Wankulukuku-based side is positioned sixth on the 16-team SUPL log with 42 points, four adrift of fourth-placed BUL FC.

Odoch’s charges will return to action on Saturday, May 7 with a home tie against BUL which is a must-win for the seven-time SUPL champions if they are to keep their dream of finishing in the top four alive.

On the other hand, there will be a guard of honor for Vipers at the AbaBet Greenlight Stadium when they visit Onduparaka on Tuesday, May 3.
