Five-time Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC narrowly edged Blacks Power FC 1-0 at the Aki Bua Stadium, on Friday.
Ashraf Mandela’s sole strike from 12 yards was enough to down a resilient Blacks Power, backed by strong support from the fans.
The hosts kick-started the match on a high and nearly scored in the fourth minute, but Michael Siwu’s freekick was punched clear by goalkeeper Fabien Mutombora.
The Venoms, in an early surge for a goal, threatened but Murushid Juuko’s eighth-minute header off Karim Watambala’s freekick sailed inches over the bar.
In the 29th minute, Yunus Sentamu nearly broke the deadlock but he shot inches above the crossbar to leave matters levelled.
The guests were yet again denied in the second half as Watambala’s stinging shot was fumbled by goalkeeper Emmanuel Odongo.
After a period of sustained pressure, the Kitende side scored off Mandela’s penalty following a handball in the box in the 74th minute.
In eighth with eight points, Vipers will return to action against Arua Hill SC on Tuesday at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
On Tuesday still, 14th placed Blacks Power (two points) will visit Maroons FC at Luzira.
