BUL FC forward Richard Wandyaka has dedicated his October StarTimes Uganda Premier League Pilsner Player of the Month award to his teammates.
Wandyaka won this season’s first accolade in the player’s category after scoring four goals and managing two assists in BUL’s brilliant start to the 2022/23 season.
“I am just a recipient of this award but it belongs to the whole team,” Wandyaka told Football256 at Kati Kati Restaurant in Lugogo on Wednesday.
“Everyone has had a tremendous contribution to the team’s good performance so far and we hope to continue doing well.”
On four goals, Wandyaka is the league’s joint leading goal scorer alongside his teammate Karim Ndugwa and Express FC’s Allan Kayiwa, and he is optimistic that his scoring form will continue.
“I like so much scoring goals because I know that it is the goals that are going to help my team win games.”
“Assisting my teammates is something I also enjoy doing, and I hope to score as many goals as possible and also make more assists.”
Wandyaka goals came in BUL’s wins over Blacks Power FC 5-0, UPDF FC 3-1, and SC Villa 1-0, Wandyaka bagged a brace against the former and a goal apiece against the Army side and the Jogoos.
He shrugged off competition from teammate Ndugwa and Maroons FC’s Fred Amaku to win the player of the month award.
The oil manufacturers find themselves on top of the 15-team SUPL log with 14 points from seven outings having won four games, drawn twice, and lost once.
They beat Blacks Power, UPDF, and Villa while they drew 1-1 with both URA FC and Gaddafi Modern FC before losing 1-0 to Express the last time out.
Despite being at the summit, Wandyaka noted that they are not under any pressure to win the title and their focus remains on searching for three points in each game they play.
“We are top of the table because we have played well to earn points but the pressure of winning the trophy is not on us.”
“The approach is to fight for three points and we see what will happen at the end of the season.”
It was a BUL day out as the Coach of the Month award also went to their manager Alex Isabirye.
Isabirye beat Villa’s Jackson Magera and Maroons’ Muhammad Ssenfuka to the award.
Wandyaka and Isabirye walked away with a plaque and a sum of one million shillings each at the awarding ceremony held at Kati Kati Restaurant on Wednesday.
