Argentina and Barcelona captain Lionel Messi was announced the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) player of the year, at the Best FIFA Football Awards in Milan.

Messi beat rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil van Dijk to the award on Monday evening.

75% of the voting for this prize is done by national coaches of FIFA Member Associations, their team captains as well as a select group of football journalists from those countries.

While, votes from the fans contribute 25 per cent of the final vote, with FIFA’s selection committee finalizing the decisions.

In Uganda, the national team captain Denis Onyango neither voted for Cristiano Ronaldo nor for Lionel Messi, however, the Mamelodi Sundowns shot stopper voted for Virgil Van Dijk as his number one choice, Mohamed Salah and Frankie De Jong took second and third choices respectively.

For the Uganda Cranes head coach Abdallah Mubiru, France and PSG forward Mbappé topped his choices, with Ronaldo and Messi completing his top three.

Stephen Mayamba who represented Ugandan journalists voted for Ronaldo, Messi, and Sadio Mané as his first, second and third respectively.

In other East African countries, Tanzanian captain Mbwana Samatta voted for Van Dijk, Mbappé and Mané while their head coach Ndairagije Etiene had Messi, Ronaldo and Salah respectively.

Rwandan captain Jacques Tuyisenge had Salah as his best player followed by Van Dijk and De Jong as second and third best respectively while the Amavubi Stars head coach Vincent Mashami voted for Mané, Messi and Ronaldo.

For Burundi, captain Saido Berahino voted for Salah, Van Dijk and Mbappé respectively while head coach Alain Olivier Niyungeko had Van Dijk, Messi and Mbappé as his best players respectively.

Manchester City winger and Algerian captain Riyad Mahrez voted for Messi as his best player, with Mané and Salah respectively while their head coach Djamel Belmadi voted for Liverpool trio Salah, Mané and Van Dijk respectively.

Nigerian captain Ahmed Musa had Messi as his best player followed by Ronaldo and Salah while head coach Gernot Rohr voted for Mbappé, Van Dijk and Eden Hazard.

Gabonese captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang voted for Ronaldo, Hazard and Messi respectively while their head coach Patrice Neveu also voted for Ronaldo as his best followed by Messi and Hazard.

Tunisian captain Wahbi Khazri and coach Alain Giresse had similar choices with Ronaldo, Mbappé and Mané their preferred three choices respectively.

In Ghana, captain Andre Ayew voted for Ronaldo, Messi and Hazard as his best respectively while head coach James Kwesi Appiah also voted for Ronaldo as his best followed by Messi and Mané respectively.

Senegalese captain Cheikhou Kouyate voted for his compatriot Mané as his best player followed by Van Dijk and Messi as his second and third respectively while head coach Aliou Cisse also voted for Mane as his number one followed by Messi and Ronaldo respectively.
