Tito Okello’s maiden hat trick for Vipers helped them restore their five point advantage on top of the table after Vipers registered a grueling 3-2 away victory in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League over BUL Bidco at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.

With contenders KCCA winning against Maroons on Tuesday to cut Vipers lead to two points, the table leaders needed nothing less than a victory to replenish their advantage at the summit of the league.

Fred Kajoba made three changes to his lineup, left back Aziz Kayondo, midfielder Brian Nkuubi and forward Tito Okello replacing Farouk Musisi, Fahad Bayo and Abdul Karim Watambala respectively who were all carrying injuries.

And they showed early intent, coming close to taking the lead twice, Nkuubi saw his snapshot well collected by BUL goalkeeper Sanon Mulabi, while Bobosi Byaruhanga’s effort from range did not trouble the keeper.

Vipers’ early period of dominance did pay off in the 18th minute, defender Denis Okot bundled down Okello inside the area, with the forward stepping up to convert the resultant penalty.

Okello doubled Vipers’ lead 10 minutes later, lobbing over Mulabi after Fabien Mutombora’s long ball caught out the BUL defence.

The visitors looked to be cruising away to victory, but their two goal cushion was cut short in the 30th minute, Fredson Gwoto scoring his first goal for the club in his sixth appearance.

The hosts were back on level terms three minutes later, capitalizing on an error by midfielder Rahmat Senfuka whose back pass was intercepted by Simon Oketch, with the latter setting up Robert Mukongotya to tap home his first league goal since October 2019.

BUL coach Arthur Kyesimira could not be happier with his new side for the resilience and fighting spirit to get back level but was forced into a substitution, after Oketch who had assisted both their goals limped off Richard Wandyaka taking his place.

With the game seemingly falling away from Vipers’ grip, Okello produced the decisive moment of the game, completing his first ever hat trick for the club with a sublime finish in the 73rd minute.

The victory was the first for Kajoba on the road since he took coaching reigns at the club. With Vipers out of the Stanbic Uganda Cup, they turn their focus to what could be the title decider against rivals KCCA, at the St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Tuesday, February 18.

BUL’s winless run continues with their fourth loss in the last five matches, they remain sixth on the log on 30 points from 21 games with an away trip to bottom side Proline FC next on Wednesday, February 19.
